Hazell Ray-Billington
Hazell grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Canterbury. At school she showed a flair for art, but did not pursue it until she began travelling as a young adult, first to the UK and Europe and then when working in the north of South Australia.
However, it was not until the 70s when she commenced studying with the artist David Beech in Ringwood that she began to find her artistic abilities. Under the guidance of David, Hazell entered the Swan Hill Inaugural Art Award and as a result was offered a solo exhibition at the Swan Hill Regional Gallery, where one of her paintings is now in the permanent collection.
When raising her family Hazell’s painting time was reduced, although she did attend classes from time to time urged on by her husband. She has painted principally in pastels and acrylics, loves working in charcoal and also (at times) enjoys watercolour discovering the medium to be challenging, exciting and with endless possibilities for exploration. She likes to capture the essence of a subject rather than its realistic rendition.
Hazell has two adult daughters and she and her husband, Colin, now live with their dogs at Inverloch, a most beautiful area of South Gippsland in Victoria. “It seems to mainly rain at night—like Camelot”, says Hazell, ”which freshens the colours and provides constant inspiration for my interpretation of what Nature provides.”
Hazell is an active member of the Bass Coast Artists’ Society, exhibits at various exhibitions throughout the year and has won several awards for her work. She recently had a solo exhibition at 'The Hub' in Inverloch for the month of June 2012.
